Below is a crowd-sourced compendium of resources that can be used with EAL learners at home with their parents or independently during the school shutdown. I have tried to arrange these thematically, but have not been able to verify every site in detail so there may be some inconsistency. It’s not a pretty list, but I hope it will provide some avenues worth pursuing.
Please note that we are not responsible for the content of external sites. Please check that the content is suitable for your learners first.
Thank you to the very many members of NALDIC who have contributed to this list – as ever in times of crisis and uncertainty, community strength is all important. We want the NALDIC/EAL community to provide support and succour during these highly unusual times. Please do keep using the NALDIC forum to stay in touch with each other and to share ideas for supporting our most vulnerable children.
If you have suggestions for inclusion on this compendium, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is an evolving list and I welcome additional resources.
Thank you. Stay safe and stay strong.

We have a free offer of over 550 dual language ebooks to schools with EAL children. I’m trying to get this onto LendED (along with the Schools Letters App) but it is taking time. So, if any school wants the homes of EAL children to access this Kitabu library, please contact us. The process is very simple, you will receive an access code which can be forwarded to any home. They can then access our ebooks from a selection of over 37 languages.
Grandparents, parents, carers with little English can listen to the story in their home language. Yes, listen. But the main purpose is to help the child gain confidence in English. The books span a large age range, 3 to 15, if one considers reading age.
So please contact email@example.com for your access code.
Hi, I am forwarding this email since this is the last day of school for many and we need this special offer to get to parents as soon as possible. This will be available also on LendED but it won’t be up till Monday.
We have taken out a special licence with the ebook providers for 20000 parents. I think if it goes to 200000, then we have a ‘Hoover/New York offer’ moment – I guess Stuart, Gordon, Frank will remember that one!
Best Robene PS also lookout for the Hampshire Blog on Kitabu.
Thank you for this. It certainly will help parents. I am also looking for activities that parents can do with pupils that does not involve computers.
Have a look at this post for some low-tech home learning ideas https://ealjournal.org/2020/03/22/at-home-low-tech-learning-activities-guest-post/
Thanks, Robene, for Mantra’s continuing support for all things bilingual and EAL etc.
[…] Resources for EAL Learners During School Closures […]
We have just launched this offer to 16000 schools in UK. Since most schools won’t have an appointed EAL Co-ordinator, we had to address the mail shot to Deputy Heads.
Please could you circulate this offer to your EAL contacts in School.
To many parents, I remember including myself, new school could be a daunting process. The Personalised Welcome Book would provide key information, and knowing what to do builds confidence. And with confidence, parents can take a more active role and not resort to being unsure for long periods of Autumn term!
There is not much time left and your help could be very beneficial to EAL and New Arrival Households. The booklet makes provision for Schools to add their own specific points, especially now for Covid19. These too can be translated at low costs and included into their Book.
Appreciate your help
PS: We have three other tools which may be attractive to MA Students in their dissertation. These are multi-lingual questionnaire exploring
1. Pupils’ Voices
2. Attitudes to Learning
3. Experiences in year 6 to 7 transitions
(thanks to Rochdale EMAS agreeing to circulate these to other Universities and Schools)
If any University would like to consider using these novel audio bilingual questionnaires in their statistical surveys do please contact us. I don’t think there are any other research instruments of this kind available.
